I had to read the last part of Beowulf many times before I saw any clear evidence that the treasure was previously owned by two different peoples. In lines 2247-2252 it is clear that the man who buried the treasure says to the earth, of the treasure "From you long ago good men took it."

The ownership of the codex before Nowell remains a mystery. The Reverend Thomas Smith (1638–1710) and Humfrey Wanley (1672–1726) both catalogued the Cotton library (in which the Nowell Codex was held). Smith's catalogue appeared in 1696, and Wanley's in 1705.

The treasure also stands for the growing bond between Beowulf and Wiglaf, the old hero and the new. Of Beowulf’s men, Wiglaf is the only one who conforms to the heroic standards of loyalty and valor. Wiglaf, in this section, establishes himself as the legitimate successor to Beowulf, who has no natural heir.

Treasure in Beowulf. In our cultivation, awaiting with symbolical property uniformly connotes indiscrimination, and the specialty of plenty is frequently viewed as incompatible—or at meanest refractory to reconcile—with our conceptionl convictions. Like Beowulf, the dragon uses its strength to accrue a huge mound of treasure, but in the end all the treasure does is bring about its death. The treasure also brings about Beowulf’s death. Possibly the poem’s Christian narrator sees greed for treasure as a kind of spiritual death, suffered by pagans who value treasure over Heaven.
