This was all it took to spark whisperings that the infamous pirate Captain Kidd had landed on Oak Island and buried the treasure he had plundered from his various voyages. McGinnis’ initial excavations with his friends yielded nothing beyond rotting oak platforms at three-metre intervals the entire length of the shaft, but that was enough to capture the cultural imagination.

Probably the very first account of any sign of treasure on Oak Island was at the end of the 18th Century. One young boy called Daniel McGinnis found a circular depression. With his friends Anthony Vaughn and John Smith, McGinnis dug a reported thirty feet into the ground. Eventually, they reached a hard surface that was seemingly impenetrable.

The first story to ever appear in print about someone finding treasure on Oak Island happened in 1857 talking about a settler named Daniel McGinnis. It wouldn’t be until five years later in 1862 that one of the diggers that were working on the dig site gave a statement of what happened.

However, at that time Dave and his wife Jane actually had the means to buy a share in Oak Island Treasure Company, which was leading the explorations at the time. Decades passed, and Blankenship eventually formed a partnership with David Tobias to found Oak Island Tours Inc. Dan’s contributions to the project are invaluable though.

Oak Island has been intermittently owned by treasure hunters ever since early settler stories started appearing in the late 1700s. The hunt for treasure got so extensive that in 1965 a causeway was built from the western end of the island to Crandall's Point on the mainland, two hundred metres away in order to bring heavy machinery onto the island. [15]

Its cryptic shape is telling, insist fans who have puzzled over Oak Island’s baffling treasure tale since . . . well, the late 1700s. The story goes that in 1795, Daniel McGinnis and two buddies were larking about on the island when they found a clay-lined shaft and two floors of oak logs. And so they began digging. And digging.

According to them, in 1795, three teenagers—Daniel MacGinnis, Anthony Vaughan and John Smith—were exploring Oak Island, an uninhabited island in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia when they noticed a depression in the ground beneath an oak tree, which is usually said to have an old rusty piece of ship’s tackle hanging from one of its branches.

The earliest known account of treasure-related activity on the island appeared in print in 1856, though tales of the land’s hidden wealth began spreading via word of mouth in the late 1700s. In 1909, future president of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt, began following developments related to the Oak Island mystery and even planned a visit in the ‘30s, but ultimately never made the trip.

Most recently, the search for the Oak Island treasure has been taken up by Rick and Marty Lagina, whose quest is chronicled in The Curse of Oak Island. Whilst the fabled treasure hoard has yet to be discovered, various intriguing historical items have been dug up over the years by the Laginas themselves and by earlier treasure hunters.
