By the end of the story, however, it's revealed that the gold bug was simply used to manipulate the narrator into joining Legrand on a journey for buried treasure: "I felt somewhat annoyed by your evident suspicions touching my sanity, and so resolved to punish you quietly." ...

The Gold Bug. When Legrand finds the bug, he feels certain it will restore his fortune, particularly after Jupiter insists the heavy insect is not just gold in appearance, but made of real gold: "De bug is a goole bug, solid, ebery bit of him." However, this mysterious gold bug gives concrete meaning to the proverb, "all that glitters is not gold."

Although exciting for readers to dream about, Captain Kidd's pirate treasure is not really the main object in "The Gold Bug." It is the cipher. Cryptology, or "logic puzzles" as they're often called now, were just becoming popular in the 19th century, and Poe helped popularize them.

Legrand's explanation of how he used observation and logic to discover the secret of Captain Kidd's treasure bears some similarities to Dupin's method of ratiocination, and they both display a fondness for subtly poking fun at others, such as the Prefect of police in "The Purloined Letter" and the narrator and Jupiter in "The Gold Bug" for their lack of insight.

Like Marc Shell, author of Money, Language and Thought, we note that in the 1830s and '40s, the "gold bugs" were those who insisted that money (coins) should be made out of gold and that paper money was a mere shadow, a ghost, a humbug that should not be accepted or used as legal tender.

"The Gold-Bug" includes a simple substitution cipher. Though he did not invent "secret writing" or cryptography (he was probably inspired by an interest in Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe), Poe certainly popularized it during his time.To most people in the 19th century, cryptography was mysterious and those able to break the codes were considered gifted with nearly supernatural ability.

Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Gold-Bug” (1843) Edgar Allan Poe may be known for his tales of the supernatural, but he had a remarkably analytical, even mathematical mind. He was extremely wary of romantic ideas of literary inspiration, claiming that, in writing “The Raven”, the work “proceeded, step by step, to its completion with the ...

The death's head, or skull, represents piracy; the image of a skull (and crossbones) on a black flag identified a ship as a pirate ship. This is the shape Captain Kidd drew on his treasure map, and coincidentally, also the shape of the markings on the gold bug's back, which adds to the mystery surrounding it. Rather than a symbol of death, the death's head in this tale becomes a symbol of fortune.

The plot is far-fetched: William Legrand, who has lost his family fortune, one day notices a golden beetle on the beach at Sullivan’s Island. He has his servant, Jupiter, wrap the bug up in a piece of parchment, on which he later discovers a coded message written in invisible ink, revealing the spot where Captain Kidd buried his treasure two centuries earlier.

Tortoise beetles get their funny name from the peculiar structure of their elytra — the hardened wing covers that protect the flying wings in beetles — which have a flattened ridge outlining the body and concealing the head and legs, much like a tortoise.
